ABSTRACT
This study was desigred to discover the changes in water content produced by ischemia in a model of experimental brain infarctioin in the rat. Brain ischemia was induced by ligation of right common carotid artery. The water content of both the ischemic and intact hemisphers was stucied in groups of rats five minutes, thirty minutes, one hour and twenty four hours after induced cerebral ischimia and control groups. The results were as follows ; 1) The cerebral edema appeared to be of two types(early, late phase) and was suggested that these were occurred by different mechanism. 2) the cerebral edema was occurred in both hemisphere(ischemic and intact hemisphere).
Key Words: Water content; Brain ischemia; Cerebral edema
