ABSTRACT |
The authors report a case of a large symptomatic ependymal cyst in a 3-year-old boy not in communication with the subarachnoid space or the ventricular system, resulting in compression of the lateral ventricle and the surrounduing structures. Computerized tormography(CT) of the boy who complained of intermittent headache since a year ago revealed a large-sized, low density mass at the left parieto-occipital region of the brain. The cyst was totally removed, and histopathological study of the evacuated mass showed that the cyst wall was composed of ciliated columnar and cuboidal epithelium with thin collagenous membrane.
Postoperatively, the patient recovered unremarkably with no neurological deficits and was discharged with complete relieval of his symptoms. The histogensis and the histopathological features are discurssed in the context of the review of the literature. |
